Domaine Francois Bertheau, Les Charmes Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru

Domaine Bertheau in Chambolle-Musigny is now owned by a fifth generation. The vineyard spans just over 6 hectares and the vines are around 45 years old. In the winery, the cuvées are matured in barrels (less than 1/3 new wood) for around 18 months and the wines are not filtered. A reference in its appellation, producing ageing wines distinguished by the finesse of their tannins.

François Bertheau heads up this eponymous family domaine and embodies the fifth generation of the family. He has been working away quietly since he took it over in 2004. However, he offers up very fine wines, like this Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes, thanks to a precise cultivation of his Pinot noir. The winemaker is committed to a deep understanding of the terroir, which is most notably characterised by clay and limestone soils from which the noble grape variety draws its distinction. Finally, the wine is refined by an 18-month maturation in containers which, thanks to the proportion of around 20 to 30 % new wood, in addition to bringing out the wine’s qualities, complexifies them.

After several years of well-warranted aging, this wine will reveal its balance between elegance, sophistication and power. It has a dense texture, and a seductively complex blend of aromas. Connoisseurs will pick up not only the typical notes of Pinot noir such as red and black fruits, violet and white pepper, but also enhanced aromas such as prune, mushrooms, truffle and musk. We recommend pairing this wine with dishes full of character such as a truffled brie.
