Bodegas Roda, Roda I Blanco Rioja 2020
HK$ 680
The orography of the Haro area is made up of small vineyard hills cultivated at all winds. The upper parts of the slopes, highly eroded by centuries of tillage, are very poor and do not adapt well to the Tempranillo variety. Formerly, these heads were used to plant white varieties, more vigorous and productive than Tempranillo. Small plots of vines planted in the most eroded soils. The soils are made up of alternating sedimentary rocks of sandstone and limestone marl, and on many occasions the sandstone is clearly visible. These Viuras live directly on the Tertiary soil. Along with them, other varieties were planted, such as Malvasía de Rioja, Garnacha Blanca and some that were destined for table consumption, such as Calagraño and Moscatel, which in this case are discarded. With a base of Viura and small proportions of Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía de Rioja, the must is macerated in French oak vats, and then fermented in the same vat and in bocoys, also made of French oak. It is in the latter that RODA I Blanco is aged for 18 months, to which are added another 18 in bottle before being in the market.
Fermentation:
Maceration in French oak vats. Fermentation in French oak vats and bocoys.
Ageing:
18 months in French oak bocoys and 18 months in bottle before release.\
Colour:
It is clean and bright, with a golden note and greenish reflections on the rim.
Nose:
Very intense, full of details and nuances. There are citrus notes reminiscent of the aroma of grapefruit skin. There is also the pleasant smell of quince and the sensation of white-fleshed peach. A very fine floral note stands out, which is related to fresh elderflower. The whole is very fresh and the citric and slightly bitter side stand out over the corpulence of the white-fleshed peach that forms the base. It also recalls the complex freshness of the vegetal and fruity aroma of rhubarb. It is very original and pairs mineral sensations that connect it to the limestone land. The oak is impeccably assembled. The set is very elegant and serious and in the nose, you can already guess the volume that will be felt in the mouth.
Palate:
When entering the mouth, a perception of fullness is generated at the same time as freshness. The retronasal route is very powerful and the whole range of fruits reappears, quince, grapefruit, white-fleshed peach and rhubarb. The mineral memories of the limestone soil also appear in the palate. The fatty component is very pleasant and covers the boa, filling it with fresh volume. The aftertaste is lengthened, leaving the citric sensation of grapefruit. There is a backbone of good acidity and freshness that forms the backbone of the wine and makes it long and vibrant.
It is an important wine, to pair with food and to age for many years.
