Domaine Cathiard Sylvain & Fils Vosne Romanee
HK$ 2,300
Sylvain Cathiard was established in the 1930s under the name “Cathiard-Molenier” by Sylvain Cathiard’s grandfather who had worked with Domaine de la Romanee Conti and Lamarche and had bought some vineyards in Burgundy. It wasn’t until 1995 that the domaine was rebranded to “Sylvain Cathiard” after Sylvain had worked 15 years on the domaine and was given ownership when his father retired. Now, Sylvain’s son Sebastien is in charge (since the 2011 vintage) after shadowing Sylvain’s work from the late 2000s.
The Domaine has always created wines that are seductive and dense, equipped with a powerful body and energy with incredible purity of fruits and depth. They currently own an impressive array of vineyards in and around Vosne-Romanee, including 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts and Romanee-St-Vivant, and vines are at least 40 years old. The fruits are completely destemmed after rigorous sorting, and following Sebastien’s belief that less new wood would create more terroir-driven wines, the use of new oak in all wines is being reduced gradually except for Romanee-St-Vivant which 100% new wood is still being employed. Viticulture is not yet organic, but Sebastien works the soil and does not use herbicides or pesticides.
Tasting Note: Red fruits at the peak of their maturity blend with gentle aromas of cacao, coffee, and pepper. On the palate, the oaky character introduces a buttery texture with soft tannins and a lovely minerality. It has an ageing potential associated with the finest Vosne-Romanée cuvées.
